Not all skills are learnt in the classroom. Xbox reframe games as educational tools.

Field Trips

For years there have been outdated preconceptions that gaming is merely a form of entertainment and a ‘time drain’ on children's lives. However, studies show that certain life skills can be learnt from unexpected places within the gaming category - skills like problem solving, team building, communication and analytical thinking - all of which are vital for young people’s development and future job prospects. We took these findings to launch XBOX FIELD TRIPS - a first-of-its-kind learning module that re-frames their most popular gaming titles as educational tools.

The ‘Field Trips’ take the shape of audio podcasts that children listen to whilst playing the game. The podcasts take them on a learning journey that prompts certain challenges to help improve important soft skills, as well as relaying interesting facts and trivia related to the theme of the game.

The audio Field Trips were authored by a team of experts led by Ollie Bray - an educational leader and an advocate for ‘learning through play’. Ollie sits on the board of education in Scotland and helps shape school learning, whilst championing the use of technology in the classroom. Check out the video below to find out more about how we developed the lesson plans.

A ground-breaking partnership with UKIE meant the Field Trips were brought into the classroom, enabling over 200,000 pupils to engage.

All of the lesson plans were also created into a downloadable e-book for children to engage with.
